The Johnson Family, Friend Camp, and Little Sister

This is going to be a bit of a departure from my family stories I usually post, but I learned so many things from this event that I want to remember. While we were in California, we heard that there was a huge lightning storm going through our area of Frisco at home. Earlier in the summer a house .5 miles from us was struck by lightning and burnt down. I was really nervous being away from home and knowing my house was vacant. I was keeping tabs on the lightning with a weatherbug app I have that shows where lightning was striking. I couldn't do anything, so I don't know why I was worrying about it so much (except that I'm the world's worst worry wort), but it kept me up for a while. I finally decided to say a little prayer and go to bed.

I am a part of a few different Facebook groups for my neighborhood and my ward. When I woke up there was a message on both that another house had been struck and burnt down a mile from my house. Someone mentioned on our Ward page that that sounded like our friends, Dave and Melissa Johnson's house. As the morning went on, it was confirmed that the Johnsons' home was the one that had been struck and was a complete loss. Thankfully, they were on summer vacation in Utah. I say "thankfully" because in Texas most of the Master Bedrooms are built on the ground floor while the rest of the bedrooms are upstairs. This was true in the Johnson home. The lightning had struck the roof above the bedroom over their little two year old that would've been in a crib. They have 4 children ages 2-8 and the outcome may have been far different had they been home. Their home was lost, but they were all okay--physically anyway.

The amazing part to me was what happened next. Our Ward family (who actually wasn't their ward anymore since our ward was split back in May) stepped up to help this family in a huge way. Women went to their home before they got home and tried to save as many items/pictures as they could. They got them out of the house and dried off to try to save them. They started care packages and donations came pouring in from our wonderful community of Frisco. The Johnson's started their 2 day trek home from Utah not having a clue what they would find when they came back. Their yard was heart attacked by our sweet sisters and babysitting, etc. was all set up for them when they came home so they could deal with insurance, etc. to figure out what they needed to do next.

I am so grateful that my little family got to serve this sweet family even though we weren't there. I called Jared that morning (he was in Chicago) and told him about what had happened. He was heading home the next day and suggested that we should offer our house to them when they get back since I was gone and he would be traveling. I thought it was a wonderful idea and called my Relief Society President to let her know our house was open. She called me back to let me know that we had answered a prayer and that the Johnson's would be staying in our home. Jared got home the next day and one of my friends came and helped him clean the house, do laundry, etc. He was such a trooper, though, and really did most of it by himself. Other ladies came and dropped off gift baskets for the kids, food for our fridge, new towels for their family, etc. It was amazing. Jared was so sweet and fielded all the women coming and going into our house--most of whom he didn't know! I think it says a lot about Jared's big heart. That's one of the things I love about him. The Johnson family came in that afternoon and were just in shock. Melissa broke down in tears as Jared handed over our keys and left. He stayed at a friend's house the rest of the weekend before he headed out of town and the Johnson family stayed in our home for two weeks.

When I got home, several of our sisters came and cleaned my house after the Johnson's left. When I walked in my door it brought me to tears. I still get teary when I think about it. The Spirit in my home was so strong. You could tell that so much love and service had been going in and out of my house while they had been there. Melissa later told me that my house will always be a sacred place to her because it was a place of refuge for her little family as they struggled with seeing their home for the first time, figuring out what to do, find a new place, etc. I love this dear family and think they are amazing. They had just moved into their new home in February. They lived in a different house in our ward, but they moved into their "dream home". Melissa had spent so much time and effort perfecting her home. I think it put a lot of things into perspective for me as to what's important in life. I feel like Jared and I were more blessed than they were because that Spirit stayed in our home for a really long time after that. Hopefully some of that is still here. We love you Johnson Family!

Some of the cards the primary kids had made for the Johnson kids:
Some of my wonderful friends that first day getting plans into action. I love all of these women.
The heart attacks in the front that the Johnson's came home to. The inside of their house was covered in two inches of water/soot/ash. It was so sad to see such a beautiful home like that. This week they just tore it down to start the rebuilding it.
Oh how my heart aches for these two.
The gift baskets and food:

Since then 2 more homes in our immediate vicinity (one two blocks from us) have been struck by lightning and burnt down. If anyone ever hears of a lightning storm going through North Texas, could you do us a favor and say a little prayer that our house won't be struck? It's a little hard to feel calm about it these days.

Now a little break for little sister. This girl has been hilarious lately. She absolutely lights up a room with this sweet smile. She's getting more teeth and learning how to tease her brother. Her favorite thing lately is to take Parker's action figures and throw them down the hall. Karma, Parker. Karma.
Trying on Brody's Angry Bird costume from last year. haha!
Now on to friend camp! Every year this amazing lady from our ward, Celeste Cragun, puts together a friend camp. She has us turn in registration forms in May so she has time to put groups together. She arranges groups by age and for a week each mom has one themed day to have the group. Then the rest of the week, the kids reconnect with friends the week before school starts, and the moms get a break! My group was the 5-7 year olds. I had 11 of them I think? I had them for 3 hours and we did a Texas theme. We did Texas crafts, learned a line dance, did old fashioned games (like Blongo ball), made footballs, etc. It was really fun and my kids loved it. They loved the whole week, actually!

Cutest kids!
Max, Gavin, Cameron, Kennedy, Brody, Corbyn, Ella
Carlie, Ashlyn, Parker, and Onnica
On Friday of that week we have a huge pool party with all the moms and kids that participated. As you can see from Celeste's post, she had 28 moms and 50+ kids participate this year. We are so lucky to live in such a fun place!

SoCal Summer Continued

Two days after we got to Bakersfield, we headed to Orange County for Jared's cousin Sheldan's wedding. The boys and I decided to spend the day in L.A. while we waited for Jared to come into LAX. The drive down was actually delightful. The boys just played and Capri took a nice, long nap in the car. When we got there, we checked out Griffith Park in Hollywood. I'd never been there and heard great things about it. My favorite part was probably the unique homes driving up there. They were so different (and close together!) and beautiful! I wanted to take the kids to the Griffith Park Observatory. I didn't have high expectations, but they were blown away! My boys absolutely loved the observatory and we had a wonderful time!

In front of the Hollywood sign:

This sweet English family saw me trying to take a selfie with all of us and took pity on me. haha Not a great picture of me, but I'll take what I can get!
The outside of the observatory. It really was a beautiful building! The boys really, really wanted to just see the huge telescopes. There was a movie also, but they weren't old enough for it. I look forward to when they are!
The view looking over the ever so smoggy, Los Angeles. Still a pretty view, though!
 Checking out the solar system:
The telescopes were their favorite parts!
We did our own experiment with the infrared camera. I had the boys pull out their ice packs in each of their lunch boxes to see who had the colder pack. Brody's won!

The statues in the front were really interesting to Brody. I love how his brain works. He would see things inside and he could tell me who the people were on the outside by what they were holding. He's a smart boy!

After the observatory and a sketchy outdoor Chick Fil A on Sunset Blvd. experience, we made our way to the LA Temple. The boys hadn't been there in a while and Miss Capri never had! I love this picture:
This one too. I love how her brothers are laughing so hard at her for not staying still for the picture. Cute siblings.
In the visitors center with this beautiful statue of Christ.
We picked up Jared and spent the night down in Orange County. The next day we spent the morning at the Irvine Spectrum and Downtown Disney with Bethany, Jordan, and their kids. We took the boys on the Ferris Wheel and they loved it!

 View from the bottom:

That evening we got all dressed up to go to Sheldan's wedding at the Long Beach Museum of Art. It's the first wedding my kids have ever been to. I was really proud of them, though. They sat quietly and were the highlights of the dance floor. Brody danced with Sheldan on multiple occasions. Sometimes even out danced him! They were both having a ball. Stake dances are going to be epic with the Musick boys!
They sure love their Mimi!
It was fun to get dressed up with my little lady:
There's Jared! Proof he was with us. It was wonderful to get to spend some time with him. We were really missing him by this time over the summer!
These pictures are a little out of order. After Jared left again, we stayed for two more weeks and then he came back to meet us to drive us home. Mimi and Poppy and B babysat for us so we could have a little getaway. When I went to pick up Jared, it worked out that my cousin Christy's kids and husband were staying at the hotel right next to LAX. They were there for Kelton and Sophia's first movie premier and I just so happened to catch them for a few minutes before they had to leave. It kind of just worked out perfectly! Love these two.
A couple of pictures from Jared and I's date night. This also just kind of worked out perfectly. We google mapped the nearest El Torito since it's a place we used to love to eat when we lived there. The closest one just turned out to be in Marina del Rey right on the water. Our table was at a window overlooking the yachts and we even got to see a wedding on one! It was serendipitous and the food was as good as we remember!

Okay, back to Bakersfield pictures. Mimi put Capri's hair in piggy tails for the very first time. I think curly hair and pig tails is my favorite combination!

Mimi and Poppy were so sweet and planned a birthday party for Brody while we were there. G-gmom and P-pops came too! I sure love these guys and I'm so grateful my kids have been able to know them. Jared is so lucky to still have all of his grandparents.
 My almost 7 year old!

One of my favorites from the whole trip:
These 3 are really hard to get a picture of all together. Kamryn was cracking me up!
Haha! Tessa has excited fists just like Brody and I have no idea what's going on with Parker. Not sure if that's scared or excited, but we'll take it.
Mimi is the best and even included a Minion pinata for the kids. They LOVED it!
Capri was belly laughing every time someone would hit it. She's hilarious!
Even Jared got in on the action:
 Scrambling for loot!
Aunt B got the boys the most fun present! It is a Lego tie that the boys can decorate. When they first opened it they couldn't quite figure out what it was:
 Then this happened! Excited boys!

Brody was so happy to have Gramma and Papa there. Such a sweet picture:
Hooray for Mimi and Poppy! My kids love these guys.
We also love Aunt B and Uncle Jordan! Uncle Jordan was sweet enough to take Brody golfing also. He even took the boys for a snow cone and earned some serious brownie points. They spoil us also!
Just a couple snapshots. Reading with Mimi:
Mimi got the kids a groupon for Pioneer Village. Bethany and I took all the kids and had a blast! The babies loved the pretend area. This picture just cracks me up. Kamryn has the cutest little spunky personality and Weston is smiling so sweetly. Cute babies!
 Nose smash!
 Handsome boy:
 Cute little cousin friends:
 Beautiful Tessa behind the wheel!
 Scary thought!
Checking out the oil derrick. My boys really enjoyed this part!
 Tuckered them out, though!

Capri's hair just keeps growing curlier and curlier and I love it. She woke up from her nap like this! My hair never looks so cute when I wake up from a nap. I'm so glad she inherited those curls. They are so fun!
One more with her cute piggies:
Like I said earlier, Jared flew to Bakersfield and we started our long drive back home to Texas. Little Capri decided to break some teeth and have an ear infection on our drive home. She screamed so long on our first day that she and I got kicked out of the car. We detoured from Flagstaff down to Phoenix and she and I flew the rest of the way home. She screamed most of the flight and Southwest lost my bags for two days, but I think it was still a better decision than spending two more days in a car with a screaming baby.
She was really just sad to be leaving all our family again...
The final tally on our odometer when I got home. We drove almost 6,600 miles in 2 months. With no electronics in the car at all. My kids are troopers and I'm grateful for the family memories we made. We sure miss living closer to our families, but I'm so grateful for the time we were able to spend with them over the summer. Makes the rest of the year feel a little better. We'll see if I have it in me to do it again next summer. Time will tell! For now, we're happy to be back in Texas!
