Preview and A Sunday Appropriate Story

We've been MIA because this guy came home:

Jared's brother Sammy returned from his two year mission to Guatamala City, Guatamala last week. It has been so fun catching up, hearing his stories, and just hanging out with him again. I'll have a longer post when we get home with lots of pictures, but for tonight I just want to share a little preview with you. Sam came home with a few treasures that I think really shows what kind of missionary he was. I borrowed some pictures and this story from his blog that my mother in-law has been keeping up. These are Sam's shoes that he brought home:
Patched, re-patched, and sewn back together.

Sam also came home sporting some pretty interesting legs. Poor guy has been living with fleas in his apartment and fleas bite. He had scars on his arms and legs from the little critters. I had no idea fleas could do that. He's amazing and we're so happy that he's back! We sure missed him!

Quick story about Jared. When Jared was on his mission in Washington D.C. he was serving a spanish speaking mission and working with the latin population. One Sunday after Sacrament meeting he was approached by one of the members in his ward. Jared was towards the end of his mission so his shoes looked much like Sam's do in these pictures. The gentleman in his ward was wearing a new pair of shoes and asked Jared what he thought of them. Jared told the guy they were nice shoes. The brother then persistently asked Jared to try one on and see how it felt. Jared put on the shoe and took a couple steps in it. He told the brother again they were nice shoes. The brother then told Jared, "Okay, we'll trade" very matter-of-factly. Jared tried to give them back but the sweet brother wouldn't hear anything of it. Jared still wears these shoes to church on Sundays even though he's been home from his mission for almost 10 years. I love this story and Jared tells me that's just very typical of the latin people. They are very loving and quick to give.

This is the story that my mother in-law posted on Sam's blog. I believe she adapted it to be particular to Sam, but it was written by an unknown author. I just thought it was a great ode to missionaries and thought I'd share it for a read on your Sunday. :)

My Shoes

I had a cool experience the other day. In the transfers I was listening to the testimony of one of the new gringos. I looked at his shoes and then I looked at mine. Tears came to my eyes. His shoes were brand new and shine-- just like the elder with his animo ready to work.

Mine were old and beat up but with a world of experience--just like the elder wearing them.

I started thinking of my shoes. They've passed though two sewing jobs, four sole replacements, and an infinite amount of paint jobs. They've passed through the halls of the MTC, pounded the paved streets of Guatemala City, and kicked up dust in the small village of Amatitlan. They've carried Books of Mormon, pamphlets, and sacks of vegetables and corn. They've tracked through sun, rain, mud and ash. They've witnessed the visit of an Apostle, the work of the mission president, and most important, the conversion and baptism of many humble Lamanites.

They love to play B-Ball with the youth, soccer with the street kids, walk to charlas and rest under the bed at night. They've been in the jaws of a dog and within the walls of the Temple. They see miracles constantly and go through heaven and hell daily. They have passed though many unexpected things and uncountable beautiful experiences-- the most beautiful this world can provide. But most important is that through all this walking, sweating, crying and laughing they have followed a path that has led them to eternal happiness.

They have followed the same path two beat-up sandals followed in Jerusalem nearly 2,000 years ago. They have followed the path of "The Master." They have taken up their cross for the love of the Guatemalan people just as those two sandals, covered in blood, took up their cross for the love of all mankind. And, just as those sandals, these two shoes have found that as they have lost their life in the service of others they have truly found themselves. They have found and eternal joy bigger than this world can provide. They have found that it's not what's on the outside that counts but what's inside the soul.

And despite all they've been through, their favorite time and place is early in the morning or late at night, face down on the cement floor, praying to their eternal and loving Father, and their Brother and Master who showed the path for all shoes to follow back to their creator, their Savior, who paved that path with blood and tears, making it possible for all to return.

These shoes aren't just for two years but are ready to walk to the ends of the earth and through all eternities to follow that path and help others to find it. I love these shoes and I love my Savior. I know he lives! I love this work!

I remember a story Brigham Young told. He was visiting a young lady on her deathbed. She had given up all her hopes for the future and her schooling at a very young age to go to work to support herself and her brother when their mother died and left them orphans. She had spent her short life working with her hands to feed her brothers. She asked Pres. Young how the Lord would know that she is His. Pres. Young said, "Show Him your hands."

When I return to my Maker, I'm going to show him my shoes.

Milestones

1. Jared is halfway done with Graduate School! Woohoo! He actually just has one class over the summer and then Fall semester left. This past week he couldn't wait to finish his finals so he could start studying for the CPA exams. I'm beginning to think he's a little crazy!

2. Brody got to sing with the Primary for the first time on Mother's Day. At our Church when the little kids reach 3 years old they join a class called Sunbeams. Brody LOVES Sunbeams. On Mother's Day the little kids all get up to sing to their Moms. We weren't in our Ward but I know the girls in the Primary in my parent's ward and found out ahead of time what songs they were singing so he could participate. I was able to go up with him since the leaders were singing part of one of the songs. Even though I just got to see him sing from the back it was so cute! My mom said he smiled the whole time. He didn't really want to leave when it was time to be done, either. Funny guy!

3. Parker reached 18 months old and that means he was able to start going to Nursery at church. This is usually a very welcome milestone as kids his age are tough to contain for the whole 3 hours of Church! Sweet Jared has had all the responsibility also as I have been teaching in the Primary since last August. He's been such a good sport about it but I know it was a happy day for him when Parker started nursery. He's been two Sundays now and seems to love it. He goes right in, never looks back to say goodbye, and plays with the big kids. He had one little hyperventilating moment this past week when they brought him in to me but other than that he's been doing great!

I think that's all for now :) I just had to get those down because in the next few days we'll have a few more! We get to meet our new niece/cousin Tessa, find out if the boys' new cousin is going to be a boy or girl, and Uncle Sammy comes home from his 2 year mission to Guatemala!! Excited doesn't even cover it. If you don't hear from us for a bit that's why!!

I'd also like to add a request for some extra prayers for our friend's little boy Grant. He had another heart surgery today and his cute family could just use some extra prayers sent their way for a speedy recovery. He's just a little older than Parker and I can only imagine how hard it would be to keep that guy contained in a hospital bed. They are such amazing people! We love you Alli, Kyle, and Grant!

The Disneyland Post

The Crew:
We made a trip to Disneyland this week since my parents are going to be moving soon and I'm not sure when we'll get to go again. They all have season passes so they also just wanted another reason to go. :) I loved going to Disneyworld and Disneyland when I was a kid but I can honestly say it's better going as a parent. I LOVE watching my boys get so excited and watching their happy faces. Parker only stayed with us for a while in the morning since he decided 4 a.m. was a good wake up time that particular day. My mom took him home for a nap and came back in the afternoon after Cheyenne got out of school. In the little time he was there, however, he had lots of smiles that I hope to share so you can share in his excitement!
The teacups have always been a family favorite:

We met Mr. Goofy
The boys played around in ToonTown
That's about the time Parker got upset and decided he wanted to take a nap. He still took time to point out the exciting parts of Main Street to Grandpa. Not sure how politically correct this is, but Aunt Ash taught Parker that an Indian says, "Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah" patting his hand over his mouth. That meant this statue elicited one of Parker's more vocal moments at Disney.
I'd just like to take a minute and say how proud of Brody I was while we were at Disneyland. Brody's personality is one that sometimes doesn't love new things. He is more likely to observe then jump right in and participate in a new activity. We discovered when we got there that Brody was just tall enough to meet the height requirement for all the rollercoasters at Disneyland (he's 41" now). I had planned on taking him on the kiddie rollercoaster first to see how he would do to see if he would be okay on the big ones. I didn't want to traumatize him and have him never want to go on another one. Well, we get to Toon Town and the kiddie rollercoaster was closed for remodel. Our Fast Passes for Space Mountain were coming up soon so we had to just go for it. Rollercoasters are some of my family's favorite things to do together. When we were growing up we lived right next to Six Flags over Texas and had Season Passes. We went ALL the time and are sort of enthusiasts. I was really hoping Brody would like it! Well, he was such a champ on Space Mountain. He was the smallest one on the ride by far and a Dad nearby used him as an example to get his much older son to not be afraid. He looked so cute! He just held my hand and put his head on my arm most of the time. In the picture they take after the ride you couldn't even see him in the car! When we stopped I asked Brody if he liked it and he said, "I was sleeping!" haha. That made us laugh. Gladly, it didn't traumatize him either because he then braved the Thunder Mountain Railroad ride (though he later said that the tunnel on that ride scared him a little). Anyway, I was really proud of him for trying new things and enjoying them. It was so much fun to get to experience that with him!
On the rockets:
Trying to get him to take a picture in front of the castle:
I wish you could see his face in this picture because it's much better than mine!
...and then Mr. Parker came back happy and ready to play!
I can't tell you how many people were laughing at Parker taking this picture:
I love these two :)
Brody and Parker both loved Dumbo. Chey was excited to take Brody:
Mr. Bright Eyes
My pretty Momma:
Again with their silly cheeseball smiles. I love that they're so happy!
A rare picture of my parents. They're worse than Jared and I about getting pictures together. I'll even take the crooked picture!
This one's out of order, but this little dude loved Dumbo also :)
Minnie just walked by...
Sisters :)
Brody and Parker's favorite ride was the Buzz Lightyear ride with the Astro Blasters.  We got some as souvenirs and that's all they've played with since we went to Disneyland. His favorite target? Aunt Ash. :) I just love how cute Brody looks in these pictures. Sometimes I get glimpses of what he's going to look like as he grows up. I'm biased, but I think he's a handsome guy. :)

Since Mom doesn't make very many appearances because she doesn't love pictures, I'm making sure to add the few she's in:(we picked up a fellow BYU fan in our boat)

One more happy face:
I highly recommend this wonderful place to everyone. We went on a Wednesday in May and got to hit all of the major attractions in the park. The morning was pretty busy probably with passholders, but by the time 1 o'clock came around the park emptied out a lot. I think the longest wait we had was 25 minutes and that was for the Dumbo ride! The weather was also perfect. Hot in the sun, breezy and cool in the shade. Not sure it could've been a more perfect day!
Finally, one more video of Parker on the Teacups. Ashley took a video like this of Brody doing the teacups 2 years ago when we came when i was pregnant with Parker.  As you'll hear in the video, he gets upset half way through that Ashley's hands are on the wheel. Have I mentioned yet that he's Mr. Independent? I think Ash is quite talented to be able to video and spin the teacup simultaneously.

Californ-I-A

We have been in California for a couple weeks now enjoying some sunshine and time with family. The boys have been having tons of fun so there will be a couple posts with their happy faces. :)
We went to the beach which was pretty empty and the boys loved watching the surfers:
Parker loved digging in the dirt. I'll draw your attention to his left foot. For some reason he didn't want that foot to be in the sand so he held it up the majority of the time. He was scooping his goldfish out with his shovel so he ended up a goldfishy, sandy mess. He didn't complain, though!

I have loved getting to spend time with my sister Ashley. I don't think we've been together this much since we were both in college about 6 years ago. She's one of my best friends and we have lots of fun together! I love my Ash-A-Bash :)
Brody liked throwing rocks with Grandpa
We built Brody a tunnel and highway for his cars. He was OBSESSED!
Ash buried her legs in the sand and Parker wasn't very sure about it. We made him smile for a picture anyway :)
Daddy would be proud. He taught Brody a long time ago to chase the birds, geese, etc. Brody saw a pack of seagulls and couldn't resist. I love that he's running while carrying his bowl of goldfish in hand. I think that's multi-tasking!
Parker tried to figure out how to throw rocks also, though, he really just carried it around like this. He never actually threw it. Maybe a smaller rock next time?
I love these happy faces!
Grandpa sunbathed fully clothed and we thought it funny :)
One day we were able to go to the airplane museum. They had B 17 and B 24 bombers flying in that day so we were able to see some neat parts of history. My Dad is a history buff and the boys just loved looking at the airplanes so we all had fun. We found a place in the middle of one of the runways also that we were able to just watch the airplanes take off. Every time one would go by Parker would yell, "Woah!", much to the delight of the elderly men surrounding us. They all thought he was hilarious.
We also were able to go spend some time with Brody's buddy Blake from home. His family was in town at his Grandparent's home. It was beautiful and we really enjoyed getting to see our cute friends while we were here. Brody loved swimming with Blake and his Dad in the hot tub. I was a little unprepared and was swimsuit-less so Dan was very kind and helped Brody swim back and forth. It will be really fun taking the boys swimming this summer back home!
The boys also worked on their golf skills... I just love this picture of baby Isaac! A golfer in the making for sure :)

Well, that's all for now. We also went to Disneyland the other day so that will be a lengthy post to come. :) Hope you're all having a great May!

Miles 4 Monte

Every now and then people come into your life and make lasting impressions. One of those people for me is a little boy named Monte. After Jared and I got married we were blessed to be in the same ward as his amazing family. A little while after we moved in I was hired to work as a communication intervener for the Utah School for the Deaf and the Blind to work with Monte. I think I worked with him about a year a half. We started with at home work and then I started pre-school with him. It was the most rewarding job I've ever had and I learned so much that I use with my kids now. I can say that I truly love Monte and his family. His sweet parents are two of the sweetest, kindest, most patient people I know. His mom, Claire, is such a great example to me of how to be an advocate for your children. He now has an adorable little sister, Piper, who I hope to meet some day as she looks like such a sweet little girl! I'm copying this off of a flier for an event that they're having to raise money for a new bike for Monte.

"Monte was born with a superman spirit in a physically challenged body. He has endured 29 brain surgeries, 3 spinal surgeries and many other tough procedures in his 9 years. He endures the daily struggle of having cerebral palsy and being deaf-blind with tenacity. Through it all, he has learned to find joy. When he rides this special adaptive bicycle, he feels free of his physical restrictions. Please help our superman fly."

I just wanted to get the word out a little more. I don't know if I have any friends that live in Missouri to participate in the 5K, but they are accepting donations through the mail also. If you'd like more information you can go to miles4monte.blogspot.com. If you're looking for a good cause to contribute to, I know this is one that will be greatly appreciated and you'll make a special little boy very happy. His family has been through so much and I hope to help make life a little better for my sweet friends.

I found these pictures on my computer of when we used to spend a lot of time together. This is how I remember my little buddy:

He really is such a happy guy with one of the sweetest spirits of any child I've ever met. Good luck to my friends and I hope we can help you fly buddy!
